Lake Constance Cycle Tour

Day 1: Individual arrival in Constance

Your cycle tour starts in the medieval town of Constance. The town is full of witnesses of its history. In the oldest quarter, the Niederburg, you'll find lots of houses which date right back to the late Middle Ages. All kinds of different events are held today in the Council of Constance Building. It is also home to a restaurant, which has a lovely terrace. The only ecumenical council to have been help north of the alps took place here between 1414 and 1418. Not far away is the nine-metre high statue of the Imperia, which stands at the harbour. The statue represents a noble courtesan from the time of the Council of Constance. On the palms of her hands, sit King Sigismund and Pope Martin V, elected during the council. To get a good view over the town, you should climb the 200 steps up the Münster church tower. The panorama is simply stunning.

Day 2: Constance ‒ Radolfzell, approx. 50 – 60 km

Today´s tour will lead you from Constance through picturesque Swiss fishing villages. On the left bank of the Rhine you will reach Stein am Rhein with its medieval houses. Back on German territory you will cycle along the Höri peninsula through Gaienhofen and Hemmenhofen, where Hermann Hesse and Otto Dix once lived. Your destination is the old imperial town of Radolfzell which is now a health resort.

Day 3: Radolfzell ‒ Friedrichshafen, approx. 60 km

Today you will cross over the Bodanrück hills and reach the Überlingen lake at Bodman. You cycle along the lakeshore towards Überlingen with its gothic cathedral. You pass the baroque pilgrimage church of Birnau and the reconstructed lake dwellings in Uhldingen on your way to Meersburg with its ancient Merovingian castle. The tour then continues on through vineyards to the Zeppelin town of Friedrichshafen, where the airship museum and the harbour are worth a visit.

Day 4: Friedrichshafen ‒ Höchst, approx. 50 – 60 km

Today you continue through orchards and pretty villages towards the island town of Lindau, with a view of the Alps along the entire journey. You should definitely take a detour across the bridge. At the harbor, arriving ships are greeted by the 33 meter high lighthouse and a six meter high lion. Climb the 139 steps to the top of the lighthouse and enjoy the panoramic view. Cycling along a beautiful lakeside path you will reach the town of Bregenz, with its famous lakeside theatre stage, in no time. You then continue on cycling through the nature preservation area in the Rhine Delta in the direction of the Swiss border.

Day 5: Höchst ‒ Constance, approx. 55 – 65 km

The last day of the Lake Constance Cycle Tour leads you through the Swiss Canton of Thurgau which due to its many orchards and its comparatively isolated situation is also lovingly known as Cider India. You then cycle along the lake shore through well kept small villages and towns back to the starting point of your cycling tour.
