On your cycling tour Lake Constance hinterland, link up Lake Constance, Upper Swabia, the Danube and the Württemberg Allgäu. You start in Constance, the biggest town on Lake Constance. On your ferry crossing to the other side of the lake, enjoy the views of the Alps and the expanse of this lovely lake. Now it's time for some serious pedalling. The Upper Swabia area calls for quite a high level of fitness thanks to its metres of altitude. Tank up on new energy in the spa resort of Bad Saulgau. You're pedalling even further upwards as you head for Ulm. The highest church tower in the world provides fantastic views of the town and surrounding countryside. About halfway back to Lake Constance, you cross the Allgäu, known for its varied countryside. At Lake Constance, you cycle via the Austrian festival town of Bregenz back to Constance along the Swiss side of the lake.

The cycling tour through Lake Constance hinterland is designed especially for cyclists who are keen on an athletic challenge. At an average of 75 kilometres per section, fun and relaxation do not go amiss either. Wonderful views, concealed moorland, historic old towns and all kinds of regional specialities sweeten the cycling. For example the sun-spoiled Lake Constance wine, the hearty dishes of Upper Swabia or Allgäu cheese - The Danube-Lake Constance cycle path is an experience - culinary speaking too!

Cycling Tour through Lake Constance Hinterland

Day 1: Individual arrival in Constance

Welcome to Constance, the biggest town on the lake! Snap up your bike after you've checked in to your hotel. Explore the harbour. Hard to miss: the Imperia statue. The nine-metre high lady, positioned on a pedestal, rotates every four minutes. It is a satiric dig at the Council of Constance (1414 - 1418) and the town's landmark. If you would like to visit the flower island of Mainau (not included in price), we recommend arriving earlier. Enjoy these magnificent flowers, the impressive old trees and the peace and calm of this very special place.

Day 2: Constance – Bad Saulgau, approx. 95 km + ferry

Right at the start of your cycling tour Lake Constance hinterland is the longest section. First, you cycle to Staad, a district in Constance. There you get on to the Constance-Meersburg car ferry. In just 20 minutes, the ferry takes you over to the other side. Enjoy the views of the lake, the approaching vineyards and Meersburg Castle. The cycle path takes you alongside the lake to Immenstaad. From there, you pedal into the hinterland heading for Markdorf. Passing meadows, forests and moorland, you cycle via Aulendorf and Bad Schussenried to today's destination, Bad Saulgau. Regain some energy after this challenging route in Bad Saulgau's Sonnenhof thermal baths.

Day 3: Bad Saulgau – Ulm, approx. 85 / 95 km

Next, the cycle path takes you through the biggest moorland area in South Germany. At Federsee lake in Bad Buchau, it's worth taking a longer break. A 1.5-km climb takes you via marshland and metre-high reeds to the lake. Ideal to get to know this moorland habitat. In Rottenacker you reach the Danube. Do you want to see more nature? A detour of ten kilometres takes you to Blautopf, a spring famous for the intense blue colour of the water. Today's destination is Ulm. It is famous for its unmistakable landmark - the highest church tower in the world. If you fancy the climb, reckon with a total of 768 steps. Enjoy the views of the town.

Day 4: Ulm – Bad Wurzach, approx. 80 km

On the cycling tour Lake Constance hinterland, today you'll be cycling through Upper Swabia. You'll hardly notice the ascent. Before the uphill stretch gets trickier on the way to Bad Wurzach, take a break in Ochsenhausen. A guided tour through the Baroque monastery (not included) gives visitors an interesting insight into the over 700-year history of this complex. Arriving in Bad Wurzach, you will be in the oldest moor spa resort in Baden-Württemberg. As well as visiting the pretty town centre, you should also treat yourself to a relaxing visit to the thermal baths. Enjoy the effect of this Black Gold, the natural moor, or the 12,000-year old thermal water, which comes out of the ground at 34 degrees.

Day 5: Bad Wurzach – Wangen, approx. 60 km

Today's section is shorter than the day before, but challenging! Along the Danube-Lake Constance cycle path, explore the Württemberg part of Allgäu. Arriving in Leutkirch, you're already bang in the middle of... the cheese triangle. The towns of Leutkirch, Isny and Wangen form the triangle – a lot of alpine dairies are based here. Try some Allgäu cheese in its most delicious form - cheese pasta or Kässpatzen as they're known locally. Pasta, cheese and fried onions -  a hearty meal typical of the Allgäu region! Now fortified, visit the historic town centres of Leutkirch and Isny before you reach today's destination, Wangen.

Day 6: Wangen – Bregenz, approx. 55 km

On the first part of today's section you have quite a few metres of altitude to tackle. But when you start seeing the first orchards and apple trees then Lake Constance isn't far. With an alpine panorama ahead of you, cycling is now along almost totally level ground. In Kressbronn, you join the Lake Constance cycle path. After only a few kilometres you arrive in Lindau. The lovely historic quarter of Lindau is idyllically located on an island in the lake. Today's destination, and where you stay the night, is Bregenz, on the Austrian part of Lake Constance. Take a cable car up Bregenz' own mountain - the Pfänder - and enjoy the stunning views of Lake Constance and the Alps.

Day 7: Bregenz – Constance, approx. 70 – 80 km

Today you'll be following the Lake Constance cycle path. It follows mostly level ground and is almost always along the side of the lake. Just after leaving Bregenz you cross the Rhine river twice - the (Alpen) Rhine, which was straightened in 1900 and the Old Rhine. Take a break in Rorschach, on the southernmost point of Lake Constance. A visit to the historic bathing cabin is well combined with a dip and a swim! Seebad Horn is also a great place to go for a swim - in your start and destination of Constance. Fresh air is known to make people hungry and thirsty! So we can recommend trying the restaurants and wine cellars for some Baden specialities in the Niederburg district.
