Pilgrimage Church

A jewel of the Baroque

Pilgrimage Church Birnau

The pink and white monastery church is the highlight of the Upper Swabian Baroque Route between Überlingen and Uhldingen. It is often compared to a soaring swan. From the terrace you have a magnificent view over Lake Constance to the Alps.

The Altbirnau church was already a magnet for pilgrims in the 14th century. Even then, it was dominated by the Virgin Mary. The new building of 1749, with its exuberant frescoes, seven altars and lots of stucco, was extremely lavish even for that time. Even today, the interior of the Birnau pilgrimage church is still considered an absolute jewel of the Baroque. Simply overwhelming.

Will you find all ten clocks? A little hint: there are three sundials, four tower clocks and three in the church itself.
