Rhine Falls

Natural wonder worth experiencing

Rhine Falls near Schaffhausen

At 23 metres high and 150 metres wide, the Rhine Falls is one of the largest waterfalls in Europe. And you can literally experience it up close! A footpath leads from the ancient Laufen Castle, which is well worth seeing, past the thundering masses of water to the "Fischetz" platform. Or watch the spectacle from Wörth Castle, which lies on a small island in the Rhine. You can also get very close to the Rhine Falls by boat from April to October. If you are brave, you can get out on the middle rock island and climb a steep staircase to a viewing platform. Simply breathtaking!

After dark, the Rhine Falls are illuminated - this wonderful spectacle alone justifies an overnight stay in Schaffhausen. Attention: The light stays off during full moon. And on 31 July. That's when the Swiss celebrate their bank holidays here with a magnificent fireworks display. Every year, around 10,000 astonished visitors take part in this event.
